|This week is National Eczema Week and this is a subject very close to my heart. In the UK, one in five children and one in twelve adults have eczema, and my 8 year old daughter is one of them!
We first became aware of Maddie’s Eczema when she was a baby and got a really sore bottom! Very quickly we switched to cloth nappies alongside Moltex Oko unbleached disposables and it made a huge difference overnight. Her Eczema pretty much went away for a few years but in recent years it returned in the form of large red circles so obvious that a friend who once saw her in a swimming lesson asked if she’d been bitten!
After many trips to the doctor and dermatologist, various different emollients, baby care, topical steroids and special all over bandages at nighttime,we got on top of it again.
And the other thing we discovered is that organic cotton clothes and bedclothes make all the difference too. As a mum I have noticed that Frugi clothes have dramatically reduced the amount of cream we need to apply to keep Maddie’s skin looking nice and moisturised and even though for schoolwear we can’t buy everything she needs in organic cotton, baby car seats, having Frugi vests and pants as a base layer definitely seems to help.
Organic cotton is much, much better for eczema because it’s soft and snuggly, pure (no nasty chemicals – yuck!) and gentle to the skin. Here at Frugi we’ve got organic cotton coming out of our ears – it comes in all sorts of different forms, from canvas and denim, to cord,Lonway Baby Store, towelling and jersey, to our super soft snuggle fleece!
A favourite of mine is the Patchwork Pony pyjamas as they’re nice and close fitting so little fingers cannot easily get to skin to scratch in the middle of the night!
